The Lab Manager is responsible for quality control, practice standardization and equipment maintenance. While primarily responsible for the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the lab, the Lab Manager demonstrates an awareness of additional internal and external forces impacting care and resources at the point-of service as well as across the care continuum.

A commitment to clinical excellence is demonstrated through participation in and support of performance improvement and the Medical Home initiatives, the consistent implementation of clinical standards of care and practice, and through professional development for self and staff.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervising and manage staff responsible for the provision of Laboratory Services.
    • Recruits, hires and trains a diverse staff.
    • Conducts performance evaluations by established deadlines.
    • Maintains documentation on employee work history including disciplinary actions, payroll, mandatory training and performance competencies.
    • Ensures education and staff development opportunities are available to staff and facilitates staff participation.
    • Audit staff practices, develop and implement systems of improvement.
    • Determine staff training needs and provide individual or group training and continuing educational programs.
  • Plan, evaluate and implement methodologies and technologies that enhance efficient and effective lab services.
    • Performs precise diagnostic studies using a wide variety of sophisticated laboratory techniques and equipment.
    • Exhibits innovation in planning improvements/new programs and problem solving.
    • Daily responsibility for quality control and evaluation of quality procedures.
    • Standardizes equipment and laboratory techniques by preparing calibration curves.
    • Maintain liaison with other agencies and health care organizations to ensure high quality continuity of care.
    • Provides sound financial management of the lab.
    • Manage the ordering of supplies and equipment in a fiscally responsible approach.
  • Provide leadership/direction to the Clinical Department(s).
    • Assists and collaborates with Medical Director for the Lab on methodological research such as evaluation of techniques, procedures, and instrumentation.
    • Works collaboratively with organizational leaders to achieve organizational goals and strategic initiatives.
    • Participates in the development and implementation of activities related to the Patient Centered Medical Home.
    • Develop a cohesive, committed and expert lab team.
    • Participates in all meetings and committees whose mission and charter impacts the lab.
    • Leads development of department(s) initiatives designed to foster team development and effectiveness.
    • Ensure ongoing lab compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies (including but not limited to: CLIA, Joint Commission, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, FDA, AABB, NCCLS).
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, or equivalent.
  • Preferred certification from one of the following organizations: ASCP, ASCLS, RMT, NCA.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory analysis techniques of chemistry, hematology, immunology, basic microbiology of clinical laboratory terminology.
  • Ability to perform high complexity clinical laboratory tests
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other.
  • Management and supervisory skills, minimum 5 years laboratory experience and technical staff.
