Job Summary

Railroad Manager is responsible for managing the operations of a short line railroad that involves movement of railroad rolling equipment, motive power, track inspection and repairs as well loading and unloading of cement and aggregate cars as needed by business demand.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage operations as outlined in WRRC / CEMEX operating plan
  • Supervise and manage the activities of operation crews, track gangs, track inspectors, and maintenance at WRRC
  • Manage operations in compliance with safe work procedures, FRA guidelines, WRRC / CEMEX policies and procedures
  • Lead people with clear direction and goals while providing coaching and guidance to employees through regular monitoring of employee performance
  • Apply collective bargaining agreements and policies while carrying out duties, including managing and coaching employees, conducting investigations, recommending corrective action and responding to grievances
  • Managing safety performance, operating practices, workforce productivity, customer satisfaction and financial productivity of the operation within WRRC / CEMEX policy
  • Provide clear communication of track condition and daily production and information to senior management in order to make adjustments as needed
  • Participate in activities related to derailments and disruptions in service, while working with operations crews and mechanical to determine cause and future prevention
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by upper management
  • Oversee and manage a program to facilitate maintenance of all rail car, locomotives, track and all associated equipment and infrastructure
  • Know customer requirements and implement work processes to meet and exceed customer expectations
  • Represent WRRC / CEMEX at customer meetings and interface with serving railroads when needed to protect customer and WRRC /CEMEX's best interests
  • Oversee and manage railcar maintenance for company's national fleet
  • Approve estimate of repairs and audit invoicing from various repair shops and Class 1 Railroads
  • Develop and manage new business with third parties to repair and service railcars and/or perform other rail-related services to third parties as determined by management

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory / safety environment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Experience managing budgets
  • 5 years or more experience in railroad operations
  • Previous experience supervising a unionized workforce
  • Labor relations experience, i.e. interpretation of collective bargaining agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline, etc.
  • Training or certification in Railroad Operations
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory / safety environment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve

  • Knowledge of rail operations and infrastructure

Working Conditions

  • Work hours may vary in length and schedule (may include a non-standard work week)
  • Combination of office work and working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
  • Enforce safe work procedures and policies
  • Respond to unexpected or emergency situations
