Position: Senior Linesman and Multiskilled Operative
Division: Infrastructure
Location: Various
Safety Critical Status: Yes
Purpose of the Role
To support the OHLE division as required. To deliver Overhead Line Projects and Renewals and associated works ensuring that the work is delivered safely and to time and budget.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
  • As you will expect the organisation may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements
  • Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.
  • Work as directed by the OLE Supervisor and or OLE Construction Manager
  • Take charge of construction activity (including OLE Core worksites as directed) and deliver the planned work safely and on time, adhering to the requirements defined in the Colas Rail Site Management Procedure
  • To manage a team and monitor/ drive the performance of staff reporting to the supervisor in terms of delivery to time, quality, specification and budget
  • Carry out the role of OLEC3 in charge of construction activities on site as directed by the OLE supervisor or Construction Manager
  • Ensure that all allocated staff working in team (OLEC2/ Machine controller/ Machine Operator/ COSS) are suitably competent staff for planned activities
  • Risk assess site conditions and work activities; and plan or initiate suitable control measures for allocated tasks
  • Working with the OLE Supervisor to deliver work activities and methodology for allocated works.
  • Working with the OLE Supervisor to review design scope develop the staging of the work, work activities and methodology.
  • Submit material orders for allocated equipment as per allocated design
  • Check all material received before fabrication to ensure correct and complete for installation
  • Deliver planned fabrication works for allocated projects as per allocated design and to relevant standards
  • Collate and complete fabrication assurance paperwork for all delivered works
  • Collate and complete installation assurance check sheets as required for delivered works
  • Produce Red Line As Built marked up drawings for completed projects timeously
  • Attend scheduled meetings for resource, construction planning/ development and integration including PDR and whiteboards.
  • Place orders for all required manpower, tools, equipment etc timeously for installation timescales as directed by OLE Supervisor.
  • Undertake detailed site visits for surveys, construction development and planning for construction activities and logistics.
  • Produce construction plan with OLE Supervisor for delivery of allocated works.
  • Produce or assist in producing multi-discipline Task Briefs and Safe Work Pack Requests
  • Check all plant is compliant for use for site prior to collection/ starting work
  • Maintain accurate records of site resources, materials and plant.
  • Produce reports for all planned and completed works as required
  • Produce reports or provide information in a timely manner
  • Undertake the supervision of OLEC2 work during the mid-week and weekend as required
  • Carry out site inspections as directed and produce snagging lists/ reports
  • Assist in audit and carry out safety inspections as directed
  • Comply with Safety Engagement Company expectations for safety conversations and close calls, vehicle inspections, safety audits etc.
  • Attend and cascade briefings as directed
  • Work at weekend / Night duty as per roster
  • Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.
  • Maintain all competencies deemed necessary for the role
  • Demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm to learn across multi functions to gain experience to support the projects you will work on
  • As part of this role, to ensure full utilization of your time you will be expected to deliver any other role identified as reasonable. Examples of this, although not limited to are Controller of Site Safety, Crane Controller, Points operator, Strapping out, Plant Operators Scheme rep, Assisting surveys, basic office works, deliveries.
Person Specification
  • Post with 'safety of the Line' responsibility
  • Monitor the compliance to health and safety regulations and clients and company rules, processes and procedures
  • Identify, remove or mitigate foreseeable risks related to construction work
  • Check that suitably competent staff is allocated to work activities
  • Comply or ensure compliance to safety critical procedures
  • Report all accidents, and incidents
  • Co-operate with your employer to enable any legal obligations to be complied with.
  • Take reasonable care for your own health & safety and that of others who may be affected by what you do or do not do.
  • Do not recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare.
  • Bring to the attention of your Supervisor/ Manager any perceived shortcomings in health and safety arrangements or situations that you consider to be serious or imminent danger to yourself or others.
  • Do not undertake any safety critical work activity or activity for which a specific competence is required, unless you have received the necessary training/instruction and/or assessment and hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence/Authority to Work.
  • You do not instruct others to undertake such work if they do not hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence/Authority to Work
  • Maintain OLEC 2/ OLEC 3 Competencies ¿ all modules as required
  • Maintain competence of delegated Authority to Work requirements
  • Competent in mandatory track back inspections to ensure safety of line - ATW
  • Hold or work towards the following competencies:
PTS and COSS
Authorised Person
ALO Coordinator
Full First Aid
Any other competencies deemed necessary for the role
Required Experience, Qualification & Skills
  • GCSE O Level Maths and English Education or equivalent
  • Robust experience in Plain Line and S&C overhead line delivery projects
  • Good knowledge of Overhead Line construction techniques for multiple OLE equipment types.
  • Computer literate
  • Robust knowledge and understanding of Network Rail and Group Standards
  • Understanding and relevant Health and safety and CDM Regulations
