Department Information


Founded in 2008, the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) is a statewide research partnership among Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame, along with a number of life sciences organizations, governmental entities and community groups. The Indiana CTSI also engages with the public at every level of research—from basic science to patient care. It has been continuously funded by multimillion-dollar grants from the National Institutes of Health since the Indiana CTSI’s founding in 2008 and is housed at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Job Summary


This position is designed to fulfill the work of grant funded projects over 2 full calendar years, and is contingent upon necessary grant funding.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists in offering human-centered design research expertise for the Community Health Engagement Program (CHEP) of the Indiana CTSI.
  • Works with supervision as a part of the Research Jam team and with CHEP leadership to develop patient-informed recommendations for scientific studies at Indiana University using human-centered design or similar qualitative research techniques.
  • Assists in human-centered design research and strategy to integrate a community and patient-centered process into research study communication design, implementation, and planning, at all times focusing on the community and patient's perspective.
  • Works with research teams to publish results of findings and to submit grant proposals to pursue insights garnered through incumbent’s work and findings.
  • Assists with research interviews, workbook creation, ethnography and modified focus groups for data collection as directed by objectives determined by lead team members.
  • Under the direction of the design research specialists, works with the team to develop tailored research methods and tools for stakeholder meetings specific to the audience, and research project needs and context.
  • Facilitates interactive qualitative sessions with project stakeholders (including patients and community members) utilizing best practices in human-centered design research such as rapid prototyping, scenario testing, modeling, role playing, user testing, etc. as appropriate.
  • Assists with analysis of textual and visual data to inform detailed reports, develops artifacts and strategies after incorporating results from qualitative analysis and using human-centered design analysis techniques such as “pattern-finding” and coding/theming to create production-ready tools for faculty to implement.
  • Supports an iterative design process by responding to feedback from senior designers, principal investigators and patients throughout.
  • Collaborates with the team regarding development and revision of study design and study acceptability, recruitment strategies, survey tools and other measurement methodologies/tools to best incorporate a patient-centered approach. Assists with preparing results for presentation in written or oral format for conferences, workshops, or public dissemination. Participates in writing of formal manuscripts and reports.
  • Participates in team discussions to refine artifacts appropriately based on the developed recommendations. Creates final artifacts as needed.

General Responsibilities

  • Performs data collection, data analysis, data management, literature research, and technical writing in support of research project(s); performs quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Consults with faculty researchers and research staff and provides input on research project evaluations and research project designs.
  • Writes various technical reports, journal articles, and/or develops presentations to disseminate and share research findings.
  • Reviews and performs various analyses to ensures quality assurance of research findings (data quality, reports, etc.).
  • Researches, reviews, and stays up-to-date on related research project reports and/or publications.
  • Represents the department with regard to related research and participates in professional development activities and programs.
  • Mentors and/or provides guidance to students, faculty, or other staff working on research project(s) through training in related aspects of research techniques and analysis as needed; may provide daily oversight to less experienced staff or student researchers.
  • Provides additional research project support as needed.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

  • Master's degree (preferably in research-oriented field such as statistics, public health/policy analysis, etc.)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • 1 year of professional experience in human-centered design work or equivalent

  • Ability to communicate ideas into visual concepts for team members to develop and refine into finished deliverables
  • Familiarity with design software such as InDesign, Illustrator, & Photoshop
  • Strong skills with design, color, & typography
  • Experience with Computer, telephone, fax, scanner, copier, digital SLR camera equipment, digital video equipment, and prototyping tools such as paper cutters, exacto knives, utility knives, etc.
  • Ability to contribute ideas and pitch recommendations to be refined or approved by supervisor

Working Conditions / Demands


This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
