Position Summary:

The UAF’s Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration (ACUASI) is recruiting for an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Remote Pilot with general aviation and UAS aviation background to join our team and help safely integrate UAS into the National Airspace System. ACUASI is a world leader in the UAS field, working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the UAS industry to help develop, test and prove equipment and techniques to allow the use of UAS for a variety of missions such as cargo delivery, infrastructure monitoring, and mammal surveys. The successful candidate will collaborate with other UAS pilots, scientists, researchers, and commercial entities to integrate payloads onto UAS to help achieve the goal of UAS operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule at a grade 80, based on education and experience. ***US CITIZENSHIP IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. Duties:

1-41Summary: Individual performs as an observer, pilot, instructor or pilot in command for UAF''s unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations. Must be capable of controlling an unmanned aircraft semi-autonomously (preprogrammed) via the GCS or controlling the unmanned aircraft manually via line-of-sight. Duties include flying or overseeing pilots/operators flying UAS under UAF''s authority as well as maintaining all documentation, training, and aircraft required to safely conduct UAS operations in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration and UAF policies, procedures, and regulations. Maintain safe and positive control of the aircraft during all phases of flight including intent to conduct flight operations. Taking appropriate actions during emergencies. Safe aircraft operation which includes but is not limited to maintaining diligent lookout and listening doctrine with available sensors, radios, and other ground control station equipment . Following air traffic control clearances. Monitoring and announcing flight parameters including, but not limited to, airspeed and altitude as required. Monitoring flight instruments and fuel, and announcing parameters during takeoff and controllability checks. Notifying crewmembers of any planned abrupt aircraft maneuvers, changes in switch positions or aircraft configuration. Computing performance data and completing appropriate presets and checklists. Safely operating the sensor payload and analyzing and reporting sensor data pertinent to safety of flight and mission accomplishment to the Project Manager and Principle Investigator. Utilizing sensor payload as necessary to collect the requested data and as appropriate for safe navigation; and stowing / securing payload for recovery. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an FAA Second Class medical certificate.
  • Understanding and knowledge of 14 Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Aviation flight experience with unmanned aircraft systems, remote control aircraft and/or manned aircraft..
  • Must be a US Citizen per ITAR regulations.
  • Speak, read and write fluent English
  • Travel both nationally and internationally for extended periods normally not greater than 30 days
  • Ability to lift greater than 40 pounds.

Typical Experience:
  • Master's degree in aeronautical engineering or related field plus 2 years manned or unmanned aircraft experience. Preferred equivalent experience is 10 years manned or unmanned aviation experience or 1000 flight hours.
  • Pass FAA Private pilot ground school
  • Commitment to obtain FAA airplane or helicopter pilot license within six months of employment.
  • Minimum private pilot license is required for this position.

Required Education or Training:

10 years aviation experience or 1000 flight hours



Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
